Bad Dental Habits

Posted .

Like the rest of us, you want to keep your smile bright, healthy, and happy. You know there are things to do to help this happen, like brushing and flossing daily. Did you know that there are some things that you should NOT do? Dr. Steven Wolfson and our team are happy to make you aware of dental habits to avoid.

Brushing Too Hard

Are you brushing your teeth too hard or vigorously? If so, you could be causing enamel erosion instead of promoting the health of your teeth. Brush your teeth gently with wide strokes. There is no need to scrub. If you worry that you brush too hard, use a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Using Teeth as Tools

Many people are guilty of this unfortunate dental habit. Chewing or biting your nails definitely falls in this category, as does tearing through packages with your teeth. Do not use your teeth as clippers, scissors, or any other tool. If you do, you could suffer from chipped or otherwise damaged teeth. For some, resisting using the teeth as tools is especially difficult. If you fall in this category, consider getting a multitool for your keychain. That way, you’ll always have nail clippers and scissors handy!
